Aims of Behaviour and Discipline code.

1.  To develop in pupils a sense of responsibility and an appreciation of order.
2.  To foster in pupils a sense of respect and consideration for others.
3.  To train pupils for life after school.
4.  To create a safe and suitable environment for learning.

In St Killian’s we aim to develop the full potential of every student in a learning environment where fairness, understanding, success and discipline will be pursued.

IN ORDER FOR THESE AIMS TO BE ACHIEVED THE ATTENTION OF PUPILS AND PARENTS IS DRAWN TO THE FOLLOWING POINTS:

Relationships:
A positive school ethos is based on the quality of relationship  between the teacher and the pupil and the way in which pupils and teachers respect each other. This positive ethos permeates through all the activities of the school and helps in forming a strong sense of social cohesion.
  • Students will show due respect for the rights of their fellow students.
  • Disruptive behaviour is unacceptable. Each student has the right to an education in an uninterrupted and happy environment.
  • Common courtesy will be expected between teachers / pupils / parents / guardians.
Attendance:
All pupils are expected to attend school punctually and regularly. In the case of absenteeism pupils are requested to produce a letter from the parent / guardian to the designated teacher.

  • School Hours 8.55 a.m.   -  3.40 p.m.
  • Lunch Break  1.15 p.m.   -  1.55 p.m.

Late arrival to the school or early departure from the school is not acceptable without permission from the School Authorities.

Working while attending school:
In order to give each student the opportunity to reach his / her full potential the school strongly discourages student's involvement in part-time or weekend work.

Dress Code:
Students must wear their school uniform daily. It is essential to have a well-maintained uniform.
Boys: Navy Pants, Navy Round Jumper with School Crest and Striped Shirt.
Girls: Navy Skirt or Pants, Navy Round Jumper with School Crest and Striped Shirt.
In the case of loss or damage to any part of a uniform only an exact replacement is acceptable.

Movement to and from classes:
When students are moving from one class to another no horseplay of any kind will be tolerated. Students should always walk on the left hand side of corridor.

Health / Hygiene:
Smoking is strictly forbidden in the school, school grounds and all school related activities.
All students are encouraged to become active and involved in their games class, school sports, school choir, and all school activities.
The chewing of gum is strictly forbidden.

Medical:
The Principal should be informed if a student has a medical or psychological complaint, disability or allergy or any other problem that might affect him / her at school. Appointments with dentists and doctors are to be made outside of school hours in so far as possible.

Use of Toilets:

No student will be refused permission to visit the toilet for medical reasons.
Parents are asked to inform the class tutor in writing or verbally of any medical problem concerning frequency of toilet use.

Studies:
Homework must be completed conscientiously and neatly.
Each student is obliged to have a homework diary and enter his or her homework daily.
Each student must have the necessary books and equipment appropriate to their subjects in class.
Disruption of class is unacceptable.
Homework diaries will be monitored by class tutors.

School Property:
The school environment must be kept clean and tidy at all times.
All school equipment and property must be treated with respect.
Graffiti or name writing in school environs will not be tolerated.
Each student will be responsible for his or her own locker and key.

Mobile Phones:
Mobile phones are not allowed at any time between arrival at school in the morning until departure from school in the evening.

Anti-Bullying Policy:
Bullying behaviour by its very nature undermines and dilutes the quality of education and imposes psychological damage. Students are required to abide by the code of discipline in relation to the anti- bullying policy in the school.

Discipline Structure:
A referral book is kept in the office where incidents of misbehaviour are recorded  and reported to Principal and Parents / Guardians.  Continuous disregard for the Discipline Code will lead to suspension.

Suspension will be considered  by the Principal and the disciplinary committee for  serious breaches of the Code

The ultimate sanction of expulsion will be considered by Principal / Board of Management in extreme cases. Parental co-operation is expected in this vital Area.

Sanctions:
The school places greater emphasis on praise / encouragement than on sanctions in the belief that this may in the long run give better results. However it is accepted that there is a need for Sanctions to register Disapproval of Unacceptable Behaviour.
Behaviour:
The consistent implementation of the school ‘code of behaviour’ is central to the effective running of our school. It ensures that an environment conducive to teaching and learning is present throughout the school year.

Chewing Gum:
Strictly forbidden within the school.

Smoking:
In line with State legislation smoking is banned at all times in the school, on the grounds, or in the environs of the school.  Please refer breaches immediately to the Principal/Deputy Principal.

Mobile Phones:
Students are allowed to bring mobile phones to school provided that (a) they are switched off at all times during the school day and (b) they are kept out of sight, preferably in a pocket or in school bags. Mobile phones may be confiscated from the time of the student’s arrival to the time of departure. Confiscated phones are to be handed into the principal’s office and the appropriate book signed by the teacher.

Uniform:
The official school uniform must be worn at all times – Tee- shirt collars must be turned down and inside vests if worn must be white.

Mobility:
All students to move in an orderly manner on the left hand side of the corridor and to queue in an orderly manner while waiting for class at classroom doors and for the school canteen.

Morning Break:
Students may not leave the school grounds at 10.40 a.m. break.  The school and grounds are supervised at break time.

Main Lunch:
Students are not permitted to leave the school grounds. The school and grounds are supervised at lunch time.

Lockers and Personal Property:
Money or other valuables should not be placed in lockers or left in classrooms.  Valuables should be kept in the students possession at all times. Lockers are assigned to students by class tutors.  Students are not permitted to use lockers between classes.

Use of Toilets:
All toilets are available for student use prior to 8:50 am, at 10.40 a.m. break, at 1.15 p.m. lunch and after 3.40 p.m.

Students Leaving School Early:
If a student has an appointment or needs to leave the school a parent is required to write in reason for leaving the school in the student’s diary prior to coming to school and have it signed by a parent. The journal must be signed by the principal or deputy. The exit book must then be signed in the principal’s office.

Inter-com System:
General school announcements and achievements will be given  on the Intercom

Formal Detention:
A formal detention system operates.
